Artist statement
My painting technique is to approach the blank canvas without a plan, and just see what comes up. Working directly from the subconscious, I use a loose action-painting approach, mashing-up images of dinosaurs, skulls, birds, eyeballs, erotica, and cartoon characters. I paint dynamically, toggling between the wall and floor, dripping and splashing, obsessively surrounding subject matter with dots, dashes, white highlights, spirals, nordic runes, glyphs, signage, trademarks, stick figures, random words and scribbles. I experiment with surface textures, glitter, metallics, and gloss finishes. I describe these pieces as "punkadelic mandalas that send the gaze on never-ending journeys.”
My tone is humorous and stream-of-consciousness, channeling the weird messages of the moment into a humorous, often sardonic, view of the world. My main influence is the pop surrealism movement with its cultural roots in underground comix, punk art, and tiki culture. Other influences are psychedelic posters, techno and rave flyers, album covers, cyberpunk, internet culture and memes.
